Have You Tried A Clothes In The Box Service?

No way can I count how many times I’ve been asked if I know about the companies that will ship you a variety of clothes in a box for you to try on.

Yes, way I know all about them and have seen quite a few sad expressions on my first time client’s faces when I ask about some of the unworn and/or unloved pieces in her closet?

So why the long faces?

Well, often it is because she imagined that by telling the online personal stylist whatever info they requested, that she would actually be getting pieces perfect for her.

Reality check time.

These services are NOT my competition, and no I don’t want to offer the clothes in a box service. I won’t change my business model from serving to selling as I’m motivated by seeing a woman looking and feeling confident, and not by making money.

I don’t believe in telling women to wear Spanx to fit into their clothes, so why should I squeeze myself to fit into someones else’s business mold? I hate constrictions of all kinds!!
If I don’t let my clients be pushed and squeezed into the wrong clothes for their shape and lives, why should I squish myself into what doesn’t fit my own business and personality?

These clothes in a box companies mission are to make money by selling you more and more, not to help you have a wardrobe that can be mixed and matched.

More stuff doesn’t mean you have more to wear.
But you probably already knew that.

You can make these online clothes in a box services work better for you, if you actually know what colors, patterns, styles, labels, and fabrics are the most flattering for you. And please request items that will give you the ability to make many more outfits vs just the one outfit they send you.

The best wardrobe is one that you can do lots of mixing and matching with, instead of clothes that don’t go with anything you already own.

It might be fun to try a service that sends you clothes in a box all wrapped up with a pretty ribbon, but based on the regrets I’ve seen on women’s faces or hanging in their closets, it doesn’t always work out and I don’t want you to think something is wrong with you or your body if the clothes don’t look that great on you.

Remember, it’s not you. They simply were the wrong clothes for you.

Today is Compliment Your Mirror Day

Today  is Compliment Your Mirror Day

No, seriously on the calendar of silly days, today actually is
Compliment Your Mirror Day.

Now, here is what you need to do………

Stand in front of your mirror with your eyes closed. Put a big smile on your face and I mean a big smile.

Now, open your eyes.

Isn’t the picture of the person in your mirror absolutely stunning?

YES, it is because you truly are beautiful.

So, make sure to compliment your mirror for displaying the beautiful person being reflected back to you.

Are Crop Pants Right For You?

You know that pair of cropped or ankle pants in your closet you bought because everyone else was wearing them?

Ever feel that they don’t look as good on you as they do on someone else?

Here’s why and what I came up with to make my only and I mean only pair I own, work for me

  • Wear VERY high heels that will cause you a great deal of foot pain to make you truly look faaabulous in your cropped pants…JUST KIDDING!! When you look at the models and celebrities that looks so good in short pants, they are typically wearing very high heels…

or if they are VERY skinny and tall then they can pull off flats.

  • You can wear ankle boots, but that is for the fashion daring women or trend follower, which personally I am of neither.

  • If you are about 5’3 or under, cropped pants just make you look shorter so skip them altogether and wear full length to add height which also create a slimming effect.

So how about trying what I did.

When I put on my, see photo, black and white print pants on last summer, I wasn’t happy with how they looked on me anymore. Heels or flats, just weren’t right.

I was trying on shoes like Goldilocks looking for the ones that would make me happy, when…

I put on my only pair of ankle strap sandals and to me, they were just right.

The ankle strap filled in that extra space, and I no longer felt chopped up.

Try this only if you already have a pair of shoes like mine. Please do not go out to buy a pair, unless you are 5’5 or taller.

If you are already on the shorter side, you shouldn’t even own a pair of ankle strap shoes as the strap cuts the leg and makes you look shorter than you really are.

Take A Look At My Client’s Before & After

Warning: This is a real before & after. No special effects, angles or filters have been used…

just a few of my MANY tips plus buying the clothes I recomended.

Be sure to check out Dress Without Stress so you’ll get the tips that will make you go from wondering why you can’t find clothes you love to wear to knowing exactly what to look for and avoid…and then you’ll finally Dress Without Stress.

It’s always fun to see a makeover in magazines and on TV, so wouldn’t it be nice to know the details that make the after so much better than the before?
Of course, it would!
Take a look at my virtual client’s makeover before & after and how tiny tweaks made big improvements in how she looks.

Before

Before Dont’s
  1. Neckline is a bit too high for her specific proportions.
  2. Cap sleeves make her arms look out of proportion to her body.
  3. Shape of this top is making her look a few sizes larger than she actually is.
  4. The top color is not right for her personal coloring and is making her skin and features dull.
  5. Pants are too short for her height & make her look shorter and wider than she actually is.
  6. Her true height is 5’3 but the proportions of this outfit make her look shorter.

After

  1. This neckline makes her neck appear more graceful.
  2. Now her shoulders are more defined.
  3. She looks easily 10 lbs thinner without having to skip a single meal as this top fits her so well.
  4. This top color makes her skin tone look healthy and peaches & cream smooth.
  5. Full length pants are best on her vs cropped. Warm weather option would be capris ending just below knees.
  6. She’s still 5’3, but looks taller while still wearing flats.

Note: Both outfits are comfortable and casual. A woman does not have to feel constricted or be over-dressed to look and feel good.

Never, ever, does looking good mean you can’t wait to get home to rip your clothes off!! You know you’ve got a great and comfy outfit, when the first thing you do when you get home is anything but, changing your clothes.

Do YOU always know what to wear?

Tired of hating the clothes you have?

Hate shopping for clothes because buying hasn’t solved the you have nothing to wear complaint?

Well if you also want to Dress Without Stress, then go here so,

In Less Than 4 Hours You’ll Go From Wondering To Actually Knowing How To Make YOUR:

Stomach Look Flatter

Butt Look Smaller

Style Less Frumpy

And saying Thank You a few times a day, cause you’ll be getting a whole lot of compliments.

“I was tired of looking in my closet and seeing clothes that I had spent money on but would never wear. I hate to think about how much money I have wasted buying clothes only to donate them never worn.
In the past, I thought that if I buy more expensive, but fewer clothes, I would have more I’d like to wear. But really, regardless of spending $5 or $100 on something, it still looked lousy on me so I didn’t wear it. Cheap versus expensive was not the issue; it was not knowing what worked for me.
Hiring Scarlett, as my personal Image Curator, I love saying that, gave me the guidance to know what to wear, buy, where to find it, and she is amazing at finding deals on quality items!
I am continuing to learn as I try more things and see ‘wow, I really see what she means, this style does NOT work on me!’
The truth is, that I feel better when I am wearing my ‘Scarlett’ outfits.”

Here’s An Easy Way To Make Your Neck Look longer

Here’s An Easy Way To Make Your Neck Look longer

Wish you had Audrey Hepburn’s enviable long neck?

I do but I don’t.

But I do know how to not make my neck look shorter, therefore longer.

Do wear shorter earrings than long ones.

Don’t wear earrings longer than approximately your upper lip.

If you wear longer earrings, you’re going to make your neck look shorter and emphasize an already short neck.

Notice how the woman being used to model these earrings has a very, very long neck. Then imagine these earrings on a more average length neck…not so great, right?

Little details make a big impact and if you want to learn more about them, check out my April 26, 2019, Stop Stressing About Dressing Styling Workshop.

Maybe Next Time You’ll Volunteer Too

I thought you’d enjoy seeing how I gave this wonderful and funny audience volunteer some of my what colors to wear tips when I presented to NAPO, The National Association of Productivity & Organizing Professionals.
She was so much fun to have up on the stage with me, but I was taken aback when she told me what she was once told by a color consultant a few years earlier.

Hmmm, does my below Virtual Wardrobe Styling client look familiar?

Are You A Fashion Coward Shopper?

Are You A Fashion Coward Shopper?

Don’t let this happen to you!!!

This week it’s all about having a laugh.

Thank you Saturday Night Live, or for us cool kids SNL, for making a hilarious video about how some women play it safe when shopping for clothes.

I tell all who’ll listen to me, that your immediate reaction is the one that counts, and if you agree you’ll love what happens in this video within 30 seconds of trying to talk yourself into buying something.

Oscar Styling Do’s & Dont’s

I was asked to contribute to an online newsletter for women, about my picks for the top and not so top Oscar Styling Do’s & Dont’s, and I thought you’d like to see my thoughts and explanations.

Personal Opinion Note: No matter how beautiful a woman looks, if she needs help walking to get her Oscar because of her dress or shoes, then her outfit is not a winner.

And The Top 3 Oscar Winners Are:

Helen Mirren – She seems to get the Best dressed Oscar EVERY year. Elegant, figure flattering, arm covering, and full of gorgeous oomph when she walked or turned around.

Oscar Styling Do's & Dont's
Helen Mirren wins Best Dressed…again.

I would love a dress like this, with naturally a hint of red in the underskirt, for me to wear to my daughter’s wedding.

Regina King – Oh, how I love a shirred waist, as it creates and/or accentuates a hour glass figure. The beauty of this dress is its simplicity, and it can easily be altered to show less leg and no train, for those of us who are a bit less daring.

Oscar Styling Do's & Dont's
Shirring done right.

Melisa McCarthy – She’s got the 3 P’s!! Power, Personality and great Pants. Proof that you don’t have too be a size 4 to look amazing! The waist inset is perfect for her and the cape not only adds drama, but also helps make her middle look narrower.

NOTE: On my FaceBook page, I got a few negative reviews on Melissa’s outfit, but I disgree. Rather than wear a tent like dress, she is showing off her curves and fabulous personality and I love that.

Waistline Definer

My 3 Least Favorites Are:

Tessa Thompson – Just because this dress is designed by Chanel, doesn’t mean Cocoa would be pleased. It looks like it was trimmed with recycled Christmas tree garland and the binding accentuates her hips which makes them look bigger and out of proportion with the rest of her great shape.

Oscar Styling Do's & Dont's
Never good to widen the middle.

Sandy Powell – I almost have no words except:
Q. What’s black and white and red all over?
A. Sandy Powell on the red carpet.

I actually love this jacket, and with narrower legged pants it could be fantastic but not for the Oscar’s Red Carpet.

Oscar Styling Do's & Dont's
Not Red Carpet Ready.

Its a tie between Linda Cardellini and Kasey Musgraves.
It’s never good to look like your wearing one of Barbie’s gowns.

Barbie’s Clothes Should Not
Inspire A Designer.

Never.

I’m a strong believer that a woman looks best when she wears a dress that flatters her instead of overpowering her.
And if a dress resembles a little girls pink bedroom, I say pass.

Pssst…Overheard In The Dressing Room

A hairdresser compliments his client by telling her he loves her outfit.
Her reply was telling him she had to change 5 times before settling on the outfit he liked.
His repsonse was “that’s why you look good!”

I love that story, and it was told to me by one of my recent new Virtual Styling clients. Now after getting my tips, she’ll likely not try on 5 different outfits to find the one she’ll leave the house in.

Here is her testimonial.

“Scarlett, THANK YOU SO MUCH for the Virtual Consultation! Your professional review & advice was very easy to follow. Your study of my wardrobe photos I sent to you including my colors, shapes & accessories helped me follow your advice. My “do’s” & my “don’ts” helped me see how to re-purpose & re-style my clothes, jewelry, scarves, shapes, colors, shoes, boots, handbags into new re-fashioned outfits right out of my own closet. Plus valuable suggestions for items I want to add to my new wardrobe.
AWESOME VALUE & TIME YOU SPENT WITH ME . . . & IT WAS LOTS OF FUN! MY NEW CALIFORNIA “STYLIN! LOVE IT!”

Mary, Not Her Real Name, Wasn’t Happy

Mary passed the mirror in her hallway and was startled when she caught a glimpse of her reflection…OMG.

What happened to her body?
How did her middle get so much bigger?
When did her body parts shift?
Why do her clothes no longer fit the way they used to?
Where are the clothes she needs to hide her lumps and bumps?
Why can’t she find anything in the stores that look good on her?

She wondered if she should just take that mirror down, but instead decided to immediately go on a diet and lose those pounds that sneaked up on her when she wasn’t looking. Problem solved?

Then 3, 4, 5…20  years later she now weighed more and had developed a great fondness for leggings and an all-black wardrobe.

The trouble was, that really didn’t work for when she had to attend a networking event, accept invitations to events, speak, or meet a potential client.

Panic would set at the moment she needed to leave her home office, and she often found herself turning down invitations that required her to get out from behind the computer.

dress without stress

Speaking of her computer, she now had developed a very unhealthy relationship with it and was finding it hard to step away from. Although unlike herself, it never judged how she was dressed, looked and felt.

Mary had some thinking to do.

She has her own business and started to realize that how she looked and felt about her very own bottom, was hurting her bottom line, and taking a serious toll on her dwindling self-confidence.

She had no idea how to dress her body or what to wear to make her look as successful and capable as she had been working so hard to be. Finally and with great relief, Mary decided she was ready to accept the body she has and finally get the help she needs to find out how to dress it.

She was ready to wear clothes with zippers and buttons, get out of the house, reduce her I’ll just stay in my legging days, and look at her reflection with confidence and a smile.

UPDATE: She turned quite a few heads the next time she went out and all her lumps and bumps were quite stylishly hidden, all because she found out how to Dress Without Stress.

Past ideas and even goals that literally just don’t fit me anymore. Thank you so much for your help. So much I never knew or even thought about!!!”  Lisa Tancredi

“I discovered Scarlett through a mutual friend whose ensemble was stunning. I had to ask “who” she was wearing. She passed me Scarlett’s name, and what I got from our engagement was so much more than a few beautiful dress recommendations. She empowered me with the knowledge of the right colors and silhouettes for my coloring and shape. I’ve received piles of compliments on the items we both chose using her guidance. She gave me a tool I will have for the rest of my life. Working with Scarlett is an investment not only in your closet but your confidence as well!” Lea Pica

“Thanks to your course I learned how to NOT draw the wrong attention to my backside, and for teaching me soooo much that I never knew about dressing.” Dr. Pamela Hoffman
