How To Wear The Same Dress Or Top Every Season

How To Wear The Same Dress Or Top Every Season

How To Wear The Same Dress Or Top Every Season

I remember the time when  I had two distinctly different wardrobes; warm and cold weather with pretty much nothing in between.

You know the drill, one closet for one season, and the other clothes are kept in an attic, basement, spare room or worse, in boxes.

Those days are long gone for me and I encourage you to try on my philosophy as the weather changes from warm to cool.

So many sleeveless tops and dresses can be ‘warmed’ up for when the temperature dips by simply adding a jacket or stylish cardigan, along with ankle or knee-hi boots, and you’re set.

Some dresses have room for a blouse underneath it, but caution is required, as if this is not done correctly, the final outcome may not look that great.

By adding a few layers, you can get many months out of a dress or top along with a lot more bangs for your bucks.

The photo above shows one option of not wearing stockings, but another choice is wearing textured or opaque hose.

BRRR. When it is brrr cold, go ahead and wear wooly clothes, turtlenecks, snow boots, parkas and whatever else you need to survive the elements, but for 45 degrees or higher, consider layering your clothes.

Although I love wearing sandals in the warm weather, there is something that always gets me excited to create outfits: Layers.

So go on into your closet and see what you can do with your layering pieces, and you may just discover how to wear the same dress or top every season.

Know someone who has a sense of humor and loves styling tips? If yes, then she should get a copy of my book Stop Stressing About Dressing.  Find out more HERE.

Yes, You Can Wear White After Labor Day

wear white after Labor Day

Yes, You Can Wear White After Labor Day, and you should as long as the weather matches your outfit.

When it is above 70 degrees, I will wear white jeans and, please don’t judge me too harshly, sandals too!

►► Go by the temperature and the skies when you choose what to wear.

Imagine how hot and silly looking it is to be wearing Uggs, on the first day of school? Imagine it being 90 degrees outside and no A.C. in the building. Just ask my daughter, who wouldn’t take my advice a few years back. She couldn’t get home fast enough to pull those suckers off her feet and store them away till it was cold outside, many, many weeks later.

Oh hell yeah, she listens to me now.

wear white after Labor Day

I have no words for his choice to wear Uggs with this outfit. Maybe, just got caught up in a trend?

►► Don’t let outdated and silly fashion guidelines keep you from being comfortable and happy.

Here I am on Periscope talking about how YES, you can wear white after LaborDay.

This article, by John Surico, for The Village Voice, gives a few descriptions of how the whole craziness of no you cannot wear white after Labor Day, nonsense started. I especially find the Gilded Age explanation the most fascinating and believable.

Scarlett is a brilliant Image Stylist

“Scarlett is a brilliant Image Stylist. She understands not only what looks good on her clients but how those clothes interact with daily life and can be an extension of brand. It was so incredible to arrive at my dressing room and find it fully loaded. I will never EVER look through racks of clothes again. What she saved me in knowing where to find the great sales (and when to pay full price) covered her fee alone. Even if that wasn’t the case she would be worth every penny. I highly recommend Scarlett!” PattyLennon.com

Are You Mustard Or Ketchup?

what to wear advice for women

There they go again, telling us what colors we must wear to look ‘in style’ for the next season.

The color Guru Pantone has named Oak Bluff as one of the must wear colors for fall.what to wear advice for women

Looks like mustard to me, and I must add that it is an extremely difficult color to wear near the face for most women, especially brunettes.

So if you must add mustard, oh I mean Oak Bluff to your wardrobe, please do so from the waist down. I just can’t give what to wear advice for women, without also giving what not to wear suggestions.

Me, and I’m not bluffing, will be sticking with ketchup…oops, I mean red. Why? Well, red is a color that works for me, and won’t make me look like a condiment.

Or so I thought. Scarlett put together my existing separates into creative, stylish looks; she helped me donate the pieces and suits that were a là mode when I last worked in an office, and identified colors, looks and pieces to fit my figure and fill in the gaps.” Jennifer M. Shopping Sales For Bathing Suits

How To Pick The Best Bathing Suit

Oh how I love this time of year. The stores are slashing prices to move out summer inventory to make room for fall shipments and shoppers.

This is the perfect time to buy a bathing suit so that when a trip or the next summer rolls around, you will not have to frantically look for a new suit and pay top dollar as well.

Keep in mind that bathing suits do not keep their shape after a few years of wear. The sun, salt water and chlorine break down the fabric and elastic, leaving behind a droopy and pilled looking suit. Not a pretty sight.

These are some of the tips I posted back in the early spring, so use them now to save yourself money, time and dignity.

How To Pick The Best Bathing Suit

Six Tips on How To Pick The Best Bathing Suit:

  1. Do not try on suits that are the same size as your clothes. Don’t ask me why, but swimwear sizes do not correspond with clothing sizes. Women need to try one to two sizes up for a flattering and comfortable fit.
  1. Choose a suit in a color that compliments you. And FYI: Avoid white, especially if you plan on getting wet. White suits will always become see-through.
  1. Highlight your smaller parts with lighter colors and camouflage your somewhat larger parts with darker colors. I use this trick to minimize what I consume at the all you can eat at buffet tables and the few too many Pina Coladas.
  1. Watch your back. No, really take a look and see if the shape of your back is pushing over the edge of your bathing suit. If it is, then go for a style that has a higher back so more of you is held in.
  1. Of course you wish you had a smaller waistline, so look for suits that have shirring at the middle. The fabric gathering is a great way to disguise muffin tops and tummy poufs.
  1. Tuck, lift and suck. Tuck, lift and suck. Repeat this mantra each time you put on your suit. Tuck in your breasts, lift up your rear so it is in the bathing suit versus hanging out around the edges, and suck in your stomach when you walk to or get up from your lounge chair.

“Thank You!
Thank you for helping me get on track. I was so overwhelmed by what I had in my closet, but now I feel better about going into my closet and getting rid of what doesn’t fit right. I am grateful for the time you spent with me and look forward to having you back, to go over my fall/winter wardrobe. I knew I wanted to make a change; I just needed a wardrobe stylist to help me. It was perfect timing that you presented at the Somers Library when you did. Someone up there must of been listening to me and sent you into my life. Thank you again Scarlett.” Terri Gorman

What To Wear To A Holiday Party. Plus 8 Tips to Add Holiday Sparkle to Your Outfit.

what to wear to holiday party

What To Wear To A Holiday Party

Needing a makeover or a chest waxing?

It’s that time of year again. The invitation has arrived to a holiday party or dinner, and the suggested dress code is ‘Festive Attire’, or dressy casual, cocktail, or smart casual. Which makes me ask: who dresses in ignorant casual?

Now you are faced with two very important questions. What do I wear and for heaven’s sake, what do these suggested what to wear dress codes mean?

So many invitations are suggesting this new dress term, and so many more people are confused by what it means.

Festive attire is NOT, what the person in the above photo is wearing. These sweaters are reserved only for a growing poplar party theme: Ugly Christmas Sweater holiday parties.

Batteries Not Included

Typically festive attire is a way of asking the guests to dress up, as in no jeans, but not go as far as a gown. It is a way of guiding you to make an effort to dress up, jazz up what you wore to work or to have a little fun with your basic black dress or pants. If any piece of clothing or accessory requires batteries, then they are not appropriate for festive attire invites to parties.

So if you’re looking to get some ideas on how to turn your basic black dress or pants outfit into a wow outfit that is fit for any festive attire event, then try a few of the following tips.

what to wear to a holiday party

A basic dress in a color that flatters you, is just the start of a perfect outfit.

8 Ways to add instant pops of festive attire, without spending lots of money:

1. Wear a necklace that has more than one strand to it. Try a multi layer strands of pearls, or combine two or three necklaces together to make a statement.

2. Combine bracelets that are slightly similar so as to create a more dramatic look than when just wearing one single bracelet.

3. Or add a cuff (wide) bracelet that has some color and/or shimmer on it.

4. Instead of a necklace, add an interesting lightweight scarf in a color that compliments your eyes.

5. Wear dramatic earrings if you are not wearing a necklace or if you chose a scarf.

6. Don’t wear your everyday handbag when you are dressing up. Wear a smaller and dressier handbag. Try one with color or even basic black as long as you do not look like you didn’t bother to switch out your bag from work or shopping.

7. Switch your shoes as well. This is the time to dust off those special occasion shoes that might be less than comfortable, than your regular pair but definitely worth it.

8. Apply gloss over your regular lipstick. It quickly dresses up your face and makes the eyes sparkle.

Don’t fall into the trap of wearing all black, unless you have added some sparkle or shimmer. Chocolate brown, navy, ruby red, emerald and sapphire are great alternatives. If you do choose to wear black, then add color with your necklaces or a scarf so you create some contrast and interest.

Remember to have some fun with your choices, and enjoy the festivities.

Holiday Shopping Tips

Holiday Shopping Tips

Shopping does not have to be stressful, painful or expensive during the holiday season or any other time of year.

Here are my tips to save you money, time and your sanity.

1. Enroll in Ebates and shop thru the their website. Each retailer offers a percentage of your purchase to be sent back to you via Ebates. So far, I have earned over $500 in Cash Back, which I would not have earned if I shopped directly at a store’s website.

2. Shop early in the day. Many stores open as early as 8am after Thanksgiving. Macy’s is opening at 7am on Saturday November 29. It is heaven to shop for yourself and others on your list, when most shoppers won’t show up till 10am. The merchandise is neat and the salespeople are still friendly and calm.

Bonus: As you are leaving totally delighted with your peaceful shopping experience, you get to see the faces of harried and hurried shoppers looking miserable and Scrooge-like.

3. Keep your list on your phone and on paper. Better safe than sorry, so be modern and traditional.

4. Keep receipts to get price adjustment if within two weeks from purchase date. I believe that we should NEVER lose the opportunity to save money, so keep your receipts on you and be ready to show them to the sales person, in the event you see the price of what you bought has been lowered.

5. Take advantage of all the sales to fill some gaps in your own wardrobe. Perhaps a new pair of boots, dress, jacket, etc. No longer do you have to wait till after Christmas Day to get a bargain.

Shop Small

This year, Shop Small Saturday is November 29. Truthfully we should really shop small businesses every day of the year. Consider supporting your local business and independent stores.

Gift Certificates

FYI, just so happens that I too am a small business and often provide Gift Certificates for a variety of my wardrobe styling services for some very much loved women. Husbands, and wives, love requests to receive my services as gifts, because they are  so tired of hearing their wives complain about having nothing to wear. Sound familiar?

holiday shopping tips“I absolutely LOVED my Skype consultation with Scarlett! My previous photoshoot was a disaster and I didn’t like my pictures. This time I was determined to give it my best. I hired Scarlett to help me choose the right clothes and accessories. I was tired of having closet full of stuff that looked great in the store, but not so much on me. Scarlett came to the call prepared. She reviewed the pictures I sent her and had incredibly helpful tips for me on how to dress, what colors and styles suit me well. She even created a WishList on an online store to show me what types of clothing might look good at me. Scarlett transformed my life. She not only helped me feel like a superstar during my photoshoot, but gave me confidence to walk away from clothes that don’t compliment me and focus on styles and colors that will make me look and feel great. Thank you Scarlett for turning my photoshoot into a success and teaching me how to be a confident shopper! I highly recommend Scarlett as a personal stylist for any professional woman who is looking to dress for success and look stunning at all times.” Silvia Pencak

Time To Say Thank You and Farewell

nothing to wear

Thank you to all my clients, readers, fans, FaceBook likers, Linked-In connections, Pinterest pinners, Instagram likers, Twitter re-tweeters and followers.

I thank the women who hated shopping for clothes, yet trusted me to show them how beautiful they can look in the clothes I found for them when we shopped together.

I thank the women who felt frumpy and out of date and almost gave up on themselves, only to see their eyes light up when they saw that they still ‘have it’ & now know how to flaunt it.

I thank the women who thought they had nothing to wear and allowed me to create multiple new outfits using what they already owned.

I thank the women who purchased my closet organizing guide, and thanked me for the tips and can now more easily find their clothes.

I thank the men who gifted my services to their wives, because they loved them and wanted their spouses to love themselves as much as they did.

2013 has been a wonderful year for me in many ways and you all helped make that happen. I thank those that allowed me to make their year special as well.

I am bidding farewell to 2013, and will be back writing my posts in January of 2014.

Merry Christmas
Happy Holidays
Seasons Greetings
and a very Happy New Year to all.

Note: My rates for my personal one to one services will be increasing in 2014.
All gift certificates purchased prior to 1/14 will be honored at the 2013 rates.
